Virginia Main Street Upgrade

  • First phase of consultation has been completed

    Virginia residents have had their say on the City of Playford’s design for their main street, with more than 375 people providing feedback on how they would like their town to look in the future.

    Local residents were consulted via pop-up workshops, community drop-in sessions and an online survey, while Virginia Primary School students also provided feedback on their town’s future design.

    “We aren’t surprised in any way that the community has so positively embraced the consultation on this exciting project,” Mayor Docherty said.  “Virginia is an important part of Playford and we’re excited to be receiving the views of residents about a project that will shape the look and feel of their home for many years to come.”

    Among the key messages resulting from the consultation were:

    • To resolve the street’s drainage issues;
    • Plant new trees and landscaping;
    • Fix the footpaths;
    • Address safety concerns for pedestrians crossing the street;
    • Make the street more attractive;
    • Deliver an outcome that is suitable to the country setting;
    • Create a destination at the Virginia Institute Park.

    Meanwhile, the primary school students had some creative ideas, such as a wishing fountain, fruit trees, sculptures in Virginia Rams colours and in-ground trampolines.

    The draft design concept will be exhibited in Virginia later this year, providing an opportunity for the community to give further feedback.

    A Summary of Consultation report will be prepared over the next few weeks and made available on this web page.
